Dear Players,

As most of you will know we are having a one night in April as usual when we present our one act Festival entry and usually a couple of other one acts as well. I have volunteered to find a third play but I am not sure how many of you will be interested and free to participate. Just to help me can you let me know if you might be interested, its no commitment, then I can decide whether to look for a, say, two-hander, or a bigger cast.

We need another comedy so if there is anything you would like me to consider please let me know that as well.

Play: The God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza
“A Comedy of manners…without manners”
Two sets of parents meet up to deal with a playground scuffle between their children. But what starts out as a civilized and rational debate between grownups on the need to teach kids how to behave properly gradually deteriorates from mild unease and discomfort, into a deluge of accusations, recriminations, jealousy and rage. There is drinking, fighting, vomiting and the destruction of some rather lovely tulips. All pretence of civility shatters as the God of Carnage wreaks havoc in the living room and all hell breaks loose.

Cast:
Veronica: Veronica is the victim’s mother, a caring earth mother‐type who turns into a wild‐woman warrior. A writer, [specialising in Africa,] and works part‐time in an art‐history bookshop. She is basically humourless and believes she is always right. She becomes insufferable as she makes a huge effort to turn the incident into something positive and is ignored. Judgemental of Alan and Annette’s parenting skills and very controlling, trying to make her husband into more than he is.

Michael: A self‐made wholesaler of domestic hardware. Jovial, brutish, uncouth and dismissive. There is a diverse range to this man, who one minute is defending cruelty to a pet hamster and next minute is conscientiously blow drying a damaged art book.

Alan: A stereotypical lawyer, constantly taking calls on his mobile phone, dealing with a crisis, defending a pharmaceutical company that has been selling a drug that may have bad side effects. Nicknames his wife “woof-woof.” A true alpha male, he likes to point out women’s limitations. Secretly proud of his bully son. Annette is his second wife, he has another son from his first marriage.

Annette: “I’m in wealth management” (specifically Alan’s). Highly strung and constantly on the verge of a panic attack. The pressures of domestic life have worn her down and she feels abandoned by her husband who is always preoccupied with work. She begins very politely with good intentions but eventually completely breaks down, becoming the most destructive of the group.
